Krampus #1 Review

by @mikebiyad on Dec 11, 2013

Christmas came a few weeks early this year with Krampus!

The Good

This book is just plain fun. It's always nice to see a writer put something cool together and focus on the humor of the book more than anything else, and look past typical comic book conventions we see these days. In Krampus! the secret society of santas is at a loss when they lose all their magical powers due to the fact that the remains of Saint Nicholas have been stolen. Trapped in the North Pole, and unable to do anything about it they must release Krampus and hope that he is able to save the day. I went into this book thinking I wasn't going to like it at all, but it really was a nice surprise. As you get older the christmas spirit slowly removes itself from your body, and if you're anything like me you try to find just about anything to bring that joyous feeling from your childhood back. Krampus has it's way of bringing you some Christmas cheer, while still providing the reader with some dark humor that is sure to have you belching out a few laughs here and there.

I wasn't really blown away by the art in the book, however it's not that bad at all. I really liked seeing all the different versions of Santa Claus from all the different regions of the world. The art really does stand out when we get the full page splashes, and Krampus really looks great.

The Not So Good

The one thing that sets this book back is that it may get a little confusing. A lot of story is getting put in all at once, and when you're introduced to so many different characters you may be asking yourself "wait, who's this guy again?". The story does wrap up nicely however and towards the end you are forgetting about what it was exactly you were confused about to begin with.

The Bottom Line

Overall, I was surprised to see how much fun Krampus! had to offer. If you want to get into the Christmas spirit in your own dark little way, I recommend picking up Krampus! I'm overally excited for the release of the second issue, and I think you will be too. I'm giving Krampus! a 4.5/5
