All Out War continues in The Walking Dead 117

The Good

After the events of The Walking Dead 116, Negan and the Saviors have taken Holly captive, and have a hoard of Zombies to deal with at their gates. Rick, and the rest of the survivors are now getting ready to go through with their second attack, hopefully rescuing Holly. This issue is a bit of a slower pace compared to the previous, where we basically see the after effects of the first attack on the Saviors base. Although it may not be as fun, this is something that we needed to see. I always liked the multitude of characters in The Walking Dead, and in this issue we get to see a lot of people. Seeing Negan and the Saviors reacting to their loss of the first battle, and dealing with the Zombie threat outside their gates is pretty cool, especially since we have never seen them at such a disadvantage until recently. Of course the war is not over, and Rick and his group of survivors are not ready to celebrate.

Adlard's art is good, as usual. When the tone is more serious we see the fear, or sorrow in the faces of our favorite characters. Of course we still see zombie faces cut in half, bashed open, and laying in puddles of blood on the ground as well.

The Not So Good

The fact of the matter is, that no matter how good this book may be as both a stand alone issue, and as a series, it sometimes seems like it is beginning to repeat istelf. Robert Kirkman has definitely created Negan to differ in many ways from the Governor, which is great, however there are many things we see that have happened about fifty or so issues ago, with different characters, and slightly different circumstances. I really hope that throughout 'All Out War', Kirkman mixes things up a bit and gives us that wow factor he's so great at throwing in our faces, instead of doing things he's done in the past with this book.

The Bottom Line

Overall it seems as though 'All Out War' is turning out to be great so far, however it is only onto its third chapter so no one knows for sure what Kirkman and Adlard have in store for us. Whether you've been reading The Walking Dead from the start, or binge-read the trade paper backs, you should definitely be excited for this issue, especially since you don't have to wait an entire month for the next one! I'm giving The Walking Dead 117 a 3.7. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
