Cataclysm Ultimates Last Stand #1 Review

by @MrAnonymous on Nov 10, 2013

The “original” world eater Galactus has arrived in the Ultimate Universe, where his promise to not devour the Earth does not need to be honored. Could this be the beginning of the end for The Ultimate Universe?

The Good

Galactus is back to being the feared devourer of worlds he was created to be. The entire Ultimates cast look like mere ants skittering away from the boot that is Galactus. I for one am glad to see things playing out this way, as Galactus as been turned into quite a joke in the 616 universe. It was also nice to see Miles Morales aka Spider-Man worry about saving lives rather than try to take on a threat way above his level. The art is great, with many small touches that visually hint at Galactus' non Ultimate Universe origin. Fans of Jack Kirby will be pleased with the inclusion of the “cosmic bubbles” Kirby was so prolific with.

The Not So Good

I know I said the art was great, and indeed it is, but some odd design changes have happened to Miles and Ganke. Visually they both look older, with Ganke looking almost like a different person altogether. It is also quite a let down to not see any sort of “cosmic council” weighing in on the arrival of Galactus as we would have gotten in the 616 universe. Another small complaint from me is that this is not the first “destruction” event for the Ultimate universe and as such seems like a cash grab instead of an organic story.

The Bottom Line

With the rumors circulating that this may indeed be the end of the Ultimate comics line once and for all, it would be a disservice to yourself to not pick up this issue and in fact this entire mini series. I'm sure that even if this doesn't end the Ultimate universe, it will have lasting repercussions that you will want to witness first hand.
