A Spider’s Edge

Edge of Spider-Verse #2

The Edge of Spider-Verse #2 is the first appearance of Gwen Stacy as Spider-woman, the 25th most popular comic (GoCollect), and a brilliant reversal of storyline from writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez. This issue premiered on September 17, 2014, and featured Gwen Stacy in an alternate universe as Spider-woman. Peter Parker in this universe merely is her boyfriend and not Spider-man. This arachnid tale is full of great plots twists in Gwen’s Spider-verse. The issue has shown an increase in value over the last three years and has held up well in price, considering it is a recent release, relatively.

Over three years the near mint graded copy of Edge of Spider-Verse #2 has returned 22% to 55%. These are enormous profits for a recent comic three years along. Furthermore, on a yearly return basis, this comic still returns as much as 54%  for very fine to near mint condition comics. If we look out three months, we see an 85% return on grade 9.0.

In summary, returns for this issue have been extraordinary from short-term to long-term and beyond. For now, prices like waves move up and down on the sea of demand. This comic market is just as fluid. The price fluctuation doesn’t matter as much as consistency and eventual return; to paraphrase the master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi,“ Timing is key to all things,” especially comic speculation.

On the collective MCU movie horizon, near term, I don’t see a catalyst for this comic. There is an animation with a new Spider-man and who knows if Gwen could appear in that. I would not categorize this animation film as a catalyst for Edge of Spider-Verse #2, in any way, shape, or form. In the future, I could see building a show around Gwen; perhaps similar to Smallville. It could happen but no catalyst as of yet.

The most recent purchase on eBay was for a grade 9.0 very fine to near mint, which sold five days ago for $100 (GoCollect). In the previous three months, as already stated this comic has returned 85%! Essentially, a significant return on a relatively small investment in Edge of Spider-Verse #2.

My spidey-sense is tingling over one nuance with this book; when I looked it up on eBay, there were zero sales of this comic.  That is a very positive sign for upward price pressure as demand over the last three years seems very consistent.

In a nutshell; Edge of Spider-Verse #2 is a hit, it is here to stay, and the pricing supports that contention.  Finally, this comic appeals to a female fan base which appears to be the future of both Marvel and DC, more femme fatales. Don’t teeter on edge, spin your web and retract a copy of Edge of Spider-Verse #2, this key has some staying power.

New Mutant Mania

The New Mutants movie release date is March 2, 2018. There are several ways to speculate on this franchise. You could buy New Mutants #1, the first issue of The New Mutants, script by Chris Claremont and art by Bob McLeod. This book shows a decline in value over the last three months. By way of example: a grade 9.6  has fallen almost 13% recently. In fact, all classes have shown a decline, except 9.4 which seems to be the consistent earner, for some odd reason. This is the perfect time to purchase this comic, New Mutants #1. On eBay currently, you can buy a 9.4-grade CGC copy for $50!  That is a pretty good deal.

If the first comic in a series doesn’t, "light your fire" you can purchase the first appearance of the New Mutants in Marvel Graphic Novel #4, art by Bob McLeod and script by Chris Claremont. Unfortunately, this issue has shown declines over the last three months, as much as 29% over that time frame. Since they first appeared in 1982, it has been a popular team. It was a great graphic novel then and now. Furthermore, longer-term has shown high returns like a 9.8 grade returning 31% over at least six years.

The March movie is a massive catalyst for these comics. The New Mutants are precisely the kind of fanfare kids love. These heroes could spark a nice price increase up to the movie.

Currently, on eBay, this issue sells for $249 in a 9.2 class. This teen superhero group might spark purchases, speculate and buy one or two copies now, ahead of the movie.
